Literally meaning finger pressure, Shiatsu combines elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine through the use of pressure points
(tsubos) and energy lines (meridians) with modern western physiotherapy to provide a whole body treatment using direct pressure,
gentle stretches and joint rotations to help ease aches and pains in the physical body and realign energy imbalances in the subtle
body. There are various forms of Shiatsu, some more physical than others. In Zen Shiatsu, emphasis is placed on balancing the
energy of the body through the Points, Meridians and additional Zones by focussing on those which are ‘depleted’ (Kyo)
rather than those that are ‘excessive’ (Jitsu), and is thus noted for being particularly gentle, soothing
and profound.
The aim is to bring the body back to a Zen-like point of stillness and calm from which place healing, integration and growth
can take place.
Zen Shiatsu has been known to help with a number of ailments such as joint pain and reduced mobility; sports injuries; menstrual disorders; asthmatic symptoms; headache, migraine and neck stiffness - as well as problems related to stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, it is known to help improve the circulation of blood and lymph, strengthen overall muscle tone, improve optimal functioning of the internal organs and has a positive effect on the immune system. Its role in prevention is as important as assisting with the recovery of existing problems.
